Ot: Had To Draw My Pistol Today

While on my walk today, I had occasion to draw my pistol but not
point it.

While walkin' along the Glacial Lakes trail, I heard a noise behind
me. That's remarkable, since I didn't have my hearing aids in place.

When I turned to look, I saw two mongrel dogs about 15 feet away.
They'd been stalking me and the noise was a growl. I saw teeth and I
wasn't looking at a doggy smile. I like dogs a lot, know a bit about
them. These were NOT friendly wagtail dogs. I don't recall seeing
collars but wouldn't swear they had none, but I was in the boonies,
not near even a farmhouse. I don't know what breed; they were about
the size of pit bulls and almost as ugly, basically dense, muscular,
shorthaired black mutts with an attitude.

I drew my .38 but didn't point it. While avoiding obvious eye
contact with the mutts I bent down, picked up a stick and tossed it at
an oblique angle not directly at them. Sometimes a hostile dog will
be distracted by that. These mutts weren't, but they did back off a
little. I took that as dismissal and started slowly resuming my walk,
while keeping the mutts in my peripheral vision, checking the
potential field of fire for distant walkers or bikers (none in sight)
and keeping the pistol out and pointed at the ground, finger outside
of the trigger guard.

After 50 yards or so, during which they didn't follow, I put the gun
away and resumed my walk at normal pace.

If they had continued to stalk and displayed any more aggressive
behavior, I'd have shot the aggressor(s) and tossed the carcass(es)
in the brush. Feral cats and dogs are fair game in rural MN, and an
aggressive critter that far from any domociles can certainly be
presumed to be feral rather than domestic. Ma nature's cleanup squad
(scavengers) would dispose of them quickly enough.

Culturing Yeast From The Bottle

I've cultured Bell's yeast successfully in the past, but I've got some
strangeness going on this time that I'm not sure how to evaluate.

I started to culture some a week or so ago by using the dregs from a
six-pack of Oberon into about 500ml of starter wort at roughly 1.040.
I put the flask on a stir plate and let it whir away for two or three
days, at which point I couldn't really tell if it had taken off or
not. The gravity had dropped some, but I wasn't getting any sense of
active fermentation.

Undaunted, I dumped this into 1.5 liters of starter wort (1.040) and
put it back on the stir plate. After another three or four days I
wasn't getting any signs of fermentation (no change in the gravity),
so I just turned it off to see what would settle out.

When I looked at it the next day there was some activity taking place,
and it looked as if there were some "mold-like" colonies on the
surface. Simply out of curiosity, I started up the stir plate again,
and by last night the gravity had dropped significantly, and the
starter had taken on that milky color I'm used to seeing.

I tasted the starter expecting to get a sour flavor, but it tasted
relatively normal. To my knowledge I've never had a wild yeast
contamination in any of my beers before, so I'm not sure what I should
be looking for. I boiled the starter wort in the flasks, so they
should have been pretty sanitary, and the flasks were sealed with
sanitized aluminum foil.

How can I tell if it simply took awhile for the actual yeast to take
hold as compared to something wild contaminating it? I hate to
sacrifice a five gallon batch if there's something wrong with it.

Ot: Hanging Around

Sorry I've been mostly MIA lately. I started a new pill little over
two weeks ago. No go. I'm stopping it today, three days after
increasing the dose to near-theraputic levels. Details are
unimportant, except that I'm a good bit bummed out.

I'm trying to find energy for a project, but I did manage to get my
sewing room picked up enough that I can see most of the floor. (No
measuring..... just eyeballing the floor space and deciding to say I
can see most of it.)

I promise I'll be back in full force very soon. I'm hanging around,
lurking, enjoying John's girly bags and Polly's Grinch needs.
Everybody be good and make pretty stuff to show me.

Which Little Machine?

I'm getting brave (and stupid) as I grow older and I've signed myself
into several upcoming classes at the LQS and beyond. And I need a
little SM -- I DO NOT want to risk my computerized machine by dragging
it to class. On top of that, the 6600 weighs approximately 3,000
pounds and I couldn't move it if I had to.

So a trip to the local Thieves Den ... um, I mean sewing machine
store.

Here's the breakdown:
Jem Gold -- $199 -- used in one kid's sewing class, cleaned, put into
original box, comes with original warranty.
Babylock Anna -- $299 -- brand new, lightweight. I think it doesn't
give quite as good a stitch as the Jem, but what do I know?
Simplicity Liberty -- 249 -- used, but completely refurbished, has a
built in carrying case, they'll give me the original warranty.

Any thoughts? I've never even heard of a Simplicity. They say it's the
same internal parts as the Jem Gold.

My instincts are to take the little Jem Gold and run. But I have an
emotional fondness for Jenome machines because that was my very first
SM and it turned me into a stitcher.

What do you guys think?

Drilling Ash, Much Smoke, Sage Advice Anyone?

7/8 Forstner, in drill press at lowest speed (350 RPM). Carbon steel.
Bit sharp (how do I know? Worked it over with a fine grit diamond file
las time I used it. This time I managed to slice myself taking it out
of the box--it didn't hurt until I saw the blood).

By the time it's maybe a quarter inch into the ash, much smoke. Tried a
piece of poplar and a piece of Douglas Fir, no smoke. Shavings coming
out are fine, continuous, hole is clean other than looking burned.
Continue on--cut a quarter inch, pull the bit out, repeat. By the time
I'm 3 inches in the bit is hot enough to burn me, overall yellow (not
just the edge, all the way up to the shank--not yellow-hot but the
straw-yellow discoloration you get when drawing the temper).

Does the same thing on the lathe at lowest RPM (500).

Drilled a dozen pieces 3 inches deep, drill continues to cut fine, so am
assuming that yellow is something coming out of the Ash and not
indicative of the bit losing temper.

Now, obvious thing to do is get a carbide bit for this job (it's going
to be continuing I hope). But was wondering if anybody had any other
sage advice.

Wtb...Archery Gear..Back Quiver

Im looking to buy a well made LEATHER or high quality other material (no
vinyl please) back quiver. Ive checked Ebay and while there are some
very good quivers there..the Vista Maverick catches my attention...Im
looking to spend as little money as possible, or swap/trade for tools,
knives other Stuff as requested.

Im shooting the bows again. After the heart surgery..I was away from it
for 18 months until my chest healed up again enough to pull a decent
draw weight bow again without snap/crackle/pop noises. Now Im healed up
and back to my Katas every day.

Also looking for take down bows, long bows, etc. Ive got more compounds
than I need (32-33" draw length) unless someone has something CHEAP that
I can teach the local kids on.

Im looking for a back quiver to take out into the hills and pop bunnies
and coyotes with. It doesnt need to be new, near new or even pretty.
Might even take something that needs a bit of repair. But something
dried out too far to save, Im not interested in. Ive got more than
enough projects on my plate as it is.

Find Septic Tank

"The Kid" bought a house this spring. No record of where the septic
tank is. He's poked with a rod everywhere, called the county, called
MANY septic companies. No one willing to help. (They just want to put
in a new system)

Best suggestion is a camera to go down the sewer, but so far, he's
found no contractors to do this.

We're about to start just digging with the hoe and looking. He's
thinking I'm the operator. I KNOW I'll hit it and bust it all to hell.

Anybody else been down this road. Good suggestions appreciated.

Todays Metalworking Aka Plan 2

Another day in manufacturing land. Temps down a bit this morning so the plant floor was
comfortable for a change.

Get called to a line. We have a special tool that feeds a fastener and torques it to spec
as part of an assembly station. The tool bit is 12" long, 1/2" dia, has a 7/16 hex on one
end, and a 5/16 hex that drives SHCS. Obviously custom tooling.

Item has a 3 week lead+shipping time. The last time I changed it I had two spares on
hand. Today, I had zero.

Well that stinks. Multi shift operation, no one admitting to using the last one.

Check with supplier, I can get it in 2 weeks if I expedite. Okay fine order some.

Take a worn out one I had in my tool box. I hold on to the old ones since I figure this
is some decent steel to do this job and I'm just paranoid that I tend to keep stuff that
might go another lap or two just in case. On a PM you replace things that might not be
totally used up to avoid down time.

What to do. We have a bunch of 5/16 hex extended bit stuff for other operations. If I
drilled a hole in the end of the tooling, I could silver braze portion of that in and make
a good tool. One problem, my special tool is hard and tough.

Okay, do what has worked for me many times. Use oxy/a torch to take detail red, check
with magnet, air cool, then machine.

Well I did that, set the tool aside, had lunch, it was still warm 30 minutes later.

Turn off the hex bit end. Chit, this thing is hard. Harder than some dowels I've turned
into step pins for locating things in my cells. Must be some sort of air hardening steel?

I know we stock #3 carbide center drill counter sinks. I had a bad feeling since the tail
stock ways on this lathe I use is whipped. Two tries, broke off the reduced diameter part
of center drill. Too much droop in tail stock.

Went to a 3/8" dia carbide spotting drill. 90 degree point. It cut wide due to the tail
stock droop and there is that 90 degree taper in bottom of bore.

I managed to change to a collet chuck before I got called away. Tomorrow, I'm going to
put a matching 90 degree taper on the piece of bit I'm going to braze in. That should
nicely center my bit in the over sized hole and allow the few thou a silver braze likes
for a good bond. Also, I can keep the heat away from the working end so I don't affect
the heat treat.

of Tide with bleach alternative, to my surprise and
satisfaction, all of the stains came out! In fact, the
stains came out so well the detectives who came by yesterday
told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and
then my attorney called and said that I was no longer
considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband.

What a relief!

Going through menopause is bad enough without being a
murder suspect!

I thank you, once again, for having a great product.

Well, gotta go, have to write to the Hefty bag people.

Titebond Iii, Melamine, Heat Observations

Just on the odd chance that someone might find it useful, I'm tossing
out a couple of observations about Titebond III.

Making wagon wheels, FWIW (not asking for advice on that, the wheels are
as done as they're going to get and I know pretty much what I did wrong
and what I need to do in the future).

First, clamping the hub pieces together I used a couple of pieces of
3/4" melamine covered particleboard (the Home Despot stuff) and a half
inch bolt. That worked a treat for clamping but the first time I did it
I neglected to wax the melamine and was surprised to find that the hub
was bonded to it tightly enough to pull some wood fibers off. There
were a couple of drips of Titebond that just came off with my thumbnail,
but where it had been under clamping pressure I had to carve it off with
a chisel.

Second, had the wheels in the car for a couple of days. They had been
sitting in the shop for a week with all joints fitting tightly. After
sitting in the car for a couple of days one of the rims opened a gap at
one of the joints between the felloes (the pieces of the rim--it's in
four sections on these wheels, on larger ones it would have been in 6 or
more). I suspect that the heat did the Titebond in.

So, lessons about Titebond III:

(1) There are circumstances under which it sticks surprisingly well to
melamine--if you don't want it to do that be sure to wax (reminder--it
also sticks to steel--wax your clamps).

(2) Heat may soften Titebond III enough for a joint with residual
tension to open up.

Lessons about wheels:

There's a reason they put steel tires on them and it wasn't just because
they wear longer--before I do more wheels I really have to set up to
make and attach tires.

Electric Motor Efficiency

I have been trying to work this out from basic principles but the answers
are at best foggy:

Consider two electric motors (commutator) with identical inputs, say 250W,
and identical RPM, say 15,000. What are the factors that determine the motor
efficiency and thus the output power?

If I understand the physics, the output power is directly related to torque
if rpm are held constant. What then, in the nature of the motor
construction, will increase its torque? Is the diameter of the rotor one of
the factors?

Needing Grinch Christmas Authority

What was I thinking? Our youngest daughter, DDIL, Grand and BF asked for
Christmas tree skirts back last December and I thought that would be such a
happy, easy gift for all 4 of them.
The one on the design wall just now is for DD. She is such a fan of The
Grinch. The stash had some terrific Grinch prints but there's an area where
I really could appliqué the words: Nah Tum Dough Ray . . except that's
probably not accurate.
Gee. I sincerely apologize. There are some among you who will have
that silly tune bumbling around in your head for hours. I really hate to

Millrite Mvi Spindle Bearing Repair - Second Report

This is a followup to "Millrite MVI spindle bearing repair - first report"
posted on 16 August 2010.

The Millrite is back together, and was improved by the experience, although the
runout is unchanged.

For all the discussion of tapping bearings onto the spindle, I never could get
it to work, and ended up using a length of 1/2-13 allthread, some black iron
pipe and machined cast-iron pipe fittings, and various washers (some shopmade)
to push the bearings back onto the spindle, and to fully seat the spindle plus
taper roller bearings assembly back into the quill, which was still in the MVI.

I also slightly reduced (by perhaps a tenth) the spindle diameter under the
upper bearing (farthest from the spindle nose) by careful manual sanding and
polishing, using sandpaper and crocus cloth backed with a piece of 0.125" thick
stiff red rubber gasket material from the local hardware store. The backing is
intended to ensure that sanding and polishing preferentially flattens any
scratch ridges and other peaks. Roughing the surface slightly also helps with
grease retention, making for easier sliding while pushing bearings into place.
It is now possible to adjust the preload by turning the round nut on the spindle.


I suppose that tapping might work if the quill were on a bench, but proved
hopelessly awkward with quill in the mill. I've certainly installed plenty of
automobile wheel bearings by tapping, but for the spindle I was not able to keep
the bearing race from cocking and jamming, and gave up.

A big arbor press would also have worked, had the quill been removed.

I didn't want to remove the quill because I would have to disassemble and later
reassemble the quill DRO assembly.


The spindle now runs very quietly - the funny noises that started this exercise
are now gone. Only the two taper roller bearings were touched, so their lack of
lubrication and contamination with grit were the cause. The races and rollers
all look OK, despite the abuse.

Milling finishes are much improved, especially when climb milling, probably
because the dirt is gone and the preload is now correct, so the spindle cannot

fully tight.


Runout is unchanged. Near the spindle, with a drill blank clamped into a fancy
3-jaw chuck, I measure 0.001" total runout, and 0.002" runout about 6" from the
chuck. This is essentially what I measured before taking the spindle apart.

For the record, the specs are 0.0005" total runout near the spindle nose, and
0.001" at 8" from the spindle nose, using a test bar. A machine made in 1965
need not apologize for having only twice the runout it had in its youth.

Part of the problem is that I get (and got) different answers with each chuck,
and have no way to know which to believe, if any. Sometimes I get very low
runout values (in the tenths), sometimes large values (a few mils). Test bars
work, but are expensive, so I'm looking for an alternative. Until this is
figured out, I won't attempt to high-spot align the bearing races.

The existing Timken bearings were high-spot marked, but the marks had been
rubbed off both outer races, probably because the quill nut was not tight
enough, allowing things to move.

Anyway, when I have an adequate way to measure spindle runout, I will simply try
different outer race orientations and keep the best, as removing and replacing
the spindle with bearings is actually fairly easy.

The trick to getting the spindle assembly out is to use a bit of allthread
passing through the spindle, one end screwed into a T-Nut in a table slot, the
other end with washer and nut bearing on the top of the spindle, then crank the
table down and/or the quill up to extract the spindle from the quill. A piece
of wood between spindle and table will prevent loose spindle hitting table. An
extra washer and nut just under the spindle would also work.

Deep Drilling Aluminum

I was making something on the CNC mill last night. It is a little
block that I would clamp to the quill of the mill, so that I would
attach the Loc-Line coolant line to the quill. That way the coolant
would follow the cutting tool as the quill is raised or lowered.

Anyway, as part of that, I had to drill a deep hole (comparatively). I
used a peck drilling cycle and it worked, but took way too long, with
withdrawal of the tool and lowering it down, etc.

So I wanted to double check what is the recommended procedure for deep
drilling aluminum.

My feeling is that at the given RPM of 2400, I should have used a much
more aggressive feed rate than I used.

Worth It?

A guy has a bunch of beer brewing stuff for sale. Over the phone, he
described two plastic five gallon buckets, one glass carboy, some tubing,
funnel, thermometer, hygrometer, capper, and three Cornelius kegs. He said
one gallon kegs, but I don't think they make one gallon sizes, do they? He
has three. I have seen the five gallon Cornelius from $20 and up depending
on condition, etc. No CO2 tank or regulator. He said they used to be syrup
containers, but were modified.

He wants $200 for it all, which sounds high to me.

Buckets $5 each for a good bucket.
Air lock $10
Carboy $40
Asst. stuff $50
3 Cornelius kegs $60.

I have trouble getting to $200 for used stuff.
